Forestry Extension

The University of Wisconsin-Madison Department of Forest and Wildlife Ecology makes available to the public publications, Internet resources, and other materials related to forests, their management, and the wood products industry in Wisconsin.

Recent Projects

Maintaining Competitiveness through Employee Ownership in the Forest Products Industry – Manual and Webinar
The goal of this manual and associated webinar is to explore the basic structure, opportunities, and challenges of the Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) and it application within the Forest products industry.

DRYFEAS Program and DRYFEAS - Lumber Kiln Drying Operation Financial Feasibility User's Manual
This manual provides an overview and discussion of the "DRYFEAS" spreadsheet program and a step-by-step explanation of data entry to use the program for your own analyses. The DRYFEAS spreadsheet model allows the user to conduct preliminary financial feasibility analysis in the developmental planning of new dry kiln operations and for preliminary financial analyses related to the operation or acquisition of existing dry kiln operations.

SAWFEAS Program and SAWFEAS - Sawmill Financial Feasibility User's Manual
This manual provides an overview and discussion of the "SAWFEAS" spreadsheet program and a step-by-step explanation of data entry to use the program for your own analyses. The SAWFEAS spreadsheet model allows the user to conduct preliminary financial feasibility analysis in the developmental planning of new sawmill operations and for preliminary financial analyses related to the acquisition of existing sawmill operations.

PROYIELD Program and PROYIELD - Sawmill Yield Analysis User's Manual
This manual provides an overview and discussion of the "PROYIELD" spreadsheet program and a step-by-step explanation of data entry to use the program for your own analyses. The PROYIELD model allows the user to project yields of lumber products and residuals generated in sawing individual logs and for user-defined log sample distributions, with user defined log, process and product assumptions. This data may be used in various types of analyses and projections including for data entry into the SAWFEAS Sawmill Financial Feasibility Analysis model.

GRADEYIELD Program and GRADEYIELD - Lumber Grade & Yield Studies for Analysis of Sawmill Profit-Potential
This manual provides an overview and discussion of the "GRADEYIELD" spreadsheet program. Since the relatively short and simple spreadsheet program includes a step-by-step explanation of data entry to use the program itself, the manual primarily focuses on how to go about conducting hardwood lumber grade/yield recovery studies and on how to use of the GRADEYIELD spreadsheet program to perform analysis of data collected in a hardwood lumber grade/yield study and interpreting the results.

CORDS Program
The "CORDS" spreadsheet program is used for chip mill analysis and estimations in cord scaling. It projects weights, and yields of chip and peeled roundwood products (and associated raw material costs on the basis of peeled cords, and chips sold by different conventions). The program allows for different assumptions regarding wood and bark volumes, moisture contents, specific gravities, losses in chipping, etc.. The program allows the user to perform different analyses using assumptions of stick-scaled or weight scaled cord inputs. The documented program requires few entries, assumes a level of background knowledge is required for reasonable assumptions. Training in the use of this program has been part of a number of extension workshops where it has been demonstrated the program is simple enough and user-friendly to the degree that it can typically be understood and used by persons having a sound basic understanding of basic forest products and wood technology regarding moisture content, specific gravity etc..

CONVERT Program
The "CONVERT" spreadsheet program provides conversions between common board foot log rules and cubic volume, for individual logs (of various diameters and lengths) and for representative log diameter distributions. The program requires no entries except for providing the assumptions for the representative log diameter and length sample distribution if aggregate conversion data are desired, consequently it does not require a manual.

Owning Wisconsin Woodlands
A collection of UWEX forestry publications, the Forestry Facts series, and other materials developed to assist landowners with the management of their woodlands. The Forestry Facts series is also accessible by clicking on Publications below.

Wisconsin Wood Using Industry Directories
Directories of primary and secondary wood using businesses.

Wood Fueled Boiler Financial Feasibility User's Manual
Manual provides an overview of "Wood Fueled Boiler Financial Feasibility," a spreadsheet program designed for easy use on a personal computer. The program provides a starting point for interested parties to perform financial feasibility analysis of a steam boiler system for space heating or process heat.

Blue Stain Brochure
Is blue stain coloring your bottom line red? Millions of dollars are lost every year when logs develop blue stain. Stained wood results in lower value or rejected wood products. Understanding blue stain problems will help you maximize the value of your logs and increase profits, create better relationships with customers, and contribute to healthy and sustainable forests in Wisconsin. Learn how to prevent this wood discoloration.

Status of the Logging Sector in Wisconsin and Michigan's Upper Peninsula: Outlines the findings of the first ever survey of logging firms in Wisconsin an the UP of Michigan, conducted in 2003.
